You have a number of things to do before you leave for a trip,
so it's very easy to let some important to-dos slip through the
cracks. Read through our list of things people often forget to do
before saying goodbye to their homes to make sure you're ready for
your next travel adventure!
1. Unplug all Electronics
Yep, even if they're not on, your electronics are energy
vampires. Unplug your TV, microwave, toaster oven - anything that
needs to be juiced - to save on your electricity bill. Just
make sure not to unplug any large appliances like the Fridge,
Stove, Dishwasher etc… or any aquariums.
2. Clean out Your Fridge and Trash
Clean out perishables from the fridge so you're not in for a
nasty surprise when you get back. Take out your trash as well so
your apartment will smell fresh and clean.
3. Contact Your Bank
Let your bank or credit card provider know that you're going to
be out of town so they should expect to see some international
charges. Typically you can submit a travel notification online and
if not then you can call them to let them know.
4. Clean out Your Wallet
Be sure to take out any extra credit cards, reward cards, and
cash you won't need for the trip. This will keep your wallet nice
and light but also help ensure that you do not lose anything you
wouldn't even need to use on the trip.
5. Freeze a Hearty Meal
Chances are you've had a lot of dinners and lunches out while on
vacation. And you're probably not going to want to hit up the store
and make dinner the moment you get back.
By freezing something easy and tasty - Bolognese sauce, soup,
etc. - you'll have a delicious dinner waiting for you when you
6. Make Copies of Important Items
Be sure to have copies of your passport and credit cards with
you in case you lose them on your trip. You can always have paper
copies or scanned copies if you have a secure email account-
whatever you feel comfortable with.
7. Pick up Reading Material and Snacks
Don't blow your budget at the airport by forgetting to buy these
8. Pack Your Chargers and Fully Charge Your
It can be easy to forget or lose your chargers when we're on a
trip, which can cause you to spend more money needlessly. Remember
to pack your chargers before you leave and to also fully charge
your electronics, so you won't run out of batteries before you
arrive at your hotel. You may need international adaptors if you
are travelling to a county where the familiar 120 volt North
American plug is not the standard.
9. Pay off Your Bills\Set up recurring
Ensure that you don't have any bills due while you're away, the
last thing you want to do while you're on vacation is worry about
bills. Most companies allow for monthly recurring payments by
completing a pre authorized withdrawal. This may include
Rent, Car Payments, Insurance, Phone Services and various other
utilities to name a few.
10. Make a List of Things you Need and Double Check
You knew this one was coming. Include things like money,
prescriptions, itinerary, confirmation numbers, emergency contact
numbers, chargers, passport, tickets, and more. Start the list well
before you begin packing and don't try to do it in one sitting
since you may forget to list something important.
