Resident - Halifax
Karen is one of the most selfless residents to ever call CAPREIT home with over 20 years' experience volunteering with organizations such as Scouts Canada, The Angel Tree Network, The LifeCenter Homeless Shelter and The Coldest Night of the Year!
As a mother of 3 grown boys and grandmother of 4 grandchildren Karen believes "it takes a community to raise productive happy children!" She is often the first to partake, and even initiate, the many activities the CAPREIT Halifax team has been involved with be it dressing as an elf and donating toys to bring the spirit of Christmas to the children, or organizing and leading craft nights. Karen says, "That's a small way for me to contribute to a bit of happiness."
After coming home one summer evening and sitting on her balcony Karen noticed many children in the courtyard had nothing constructive to do. After walking past her paints and canvas Karen had a spontaneous idea and sprang into action organizing 'paint nights'. Karen said, "I grabbed my paints and a canvas and headed to the courtyard and sat down… and the children just came to me, the fun we had that evening ...it was magical, for 2 hours children were focused and smiling and quiet."
Since that night Karen has organized 3 additional paints nights with hopes to do more throughout 2017.
It's residents like Karen that make us proud to be able to offer them a home they can take pride in. We thank her for choosing a CAPREIT building as her home and for graciously exhibiting the spirit of "CAPREIT Living".
