Giving back to our residents
CAPREIT strives to give back to our residents across Canada, especially the children who depend on community resources. With this being said in the summer of 2009 a program was created by a CAPREIT employee that targeted the children in one of our Brampton communities. CAPREIT introduced Whacky Wednesdays! During the summer break, each Wednesday (hence the name of the program), CAPREIT staff would volunteer time to coordinate and lead safe, fun, and inclusive activities with the children at one of our buildings in Brampton. For one hour between 10am-11am, the children were invited to participate in fun-filled activities that included tattoo art and balloon toss, to name a few.
After two years of running Whacky Wednesdays, and with great positive feedback from the parents and children, it was decided to expand the program to a total of eight different buildings within the GTA and to re-brand as CAPREIT's Summer Palooza.
Summer Palooza gave us the opportunity to connect with entire families. Many parents came out to cheer on their children and those of their fellow residents. The 'Thank You' letters we received from children and parents were the best recognition we could have obtained.
In 2013, the program evolved again in that now more time was added to spend at the sites. Instead of an hour the program ran for 90 minutes at each of the eight buildings Monday to Thursday. For nine weeks, volunteers from head office and summer students attended two separate buildings (per day) for a morning session (10am-11:30am) and then an afternoon session (12:30pm-2:00pm).
One year we had Summer Palooza Olympics, Summer Palooza Hunger Games and Palooza's Got Talent to name a few. These exciting events always end with the children laughing and smiling and anxiously waiting for the following week's event.
At the end of the 90 minutes presents purchased by CAPREIT were given to the kids attending and the smiles on the faces of the children made the program a massive success in the eyes of the volunteer staff and summer students.
At CAPREIT we value the many residents living within our communities. Summer Palooza is one small way CAPREIT can give back to our residents, families and children.
