Websters dictionary defines ‘Mindfulness’ as the ‘practice of maintaining a non-judgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions or experiences on a moment to moment basis’.
Over the past year, have you taken the time for yourself to be more mindful. With working from home, to online learning, to quarantining and choosing to stay home, it is not very likely.
We have compiled a list of things you can do, that doesn’t have to take a lot of time, to help you bring a little mindfulness in your life.
Meditation can help you to take control of negative thoughts and stress in your day. You don’t have to spend hours meditating, a quick 5 minutes could make the difference. Begin to clear you mind in those 5 minutes, embrace those
thoughts that enter your head while meditating. The goal of meditation is to see the thoughts, acknowledge them but not cling to it. Meditation can help you change the course of your thoughts, when your mind would normally go one direction,
meditation can take it another.

Yoga as a method of mindfulness is a great form of self-care. It allows you to pause and to check in with your mind and your body. Looking after yourself is an essential part of life, not a luxury. Even 10 minutes of yoga can
make a change in your day. It allows you to re-centre and focus on you.

Exercise is an incredible way to practice mindfulness. Many of us distract ourselves from our workouts with music or podcasts, but what if you turned it off? You may find that it actually feels good to push your body through the
movements. Do you find that during a workout you are focused on watching the clock, or rushing through the workout, or maybe even thinking about everything else you need to do today. Pay attention next time you are working out, feel the movement
of your body, be more mindful of how each move feels. You may just find that you will get more out of your workout.

Reading a book gives you the ability to turn off the world outside and escape. A good book can transport you into a world of adventure and excitement. The best part of a good book is you can take it anywhere. Throw a paperback
in your purse or backpack or download a copy onto your phone. You then have easy access to read you next great adventure and, take a moment for yourself to be mindful.

Get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. That doesn’t mean you need to trek to the mountains to find peace. There are some incredible inner-city parks throughout Canada that are easy to get to and have tons of things to do.
Vancouver has the beautiful Stanley Park; you may see some deer at Calgary’s Nose Hill Park; Regina has a 9300 hectare urban park Wasana Centre; enjoy the diverse activities at High Park in Toronto or the popular Halifax Common in Halifax. Either way step outside and be mindful of the experience.

Positive Affirmation is a fantastic way to remind yourself that you are amazing. Ask yourself, are your thoughts helping you or holding you back. Consider choosing encouraging, loving and supportive thoughts. This will help you
reach your goal. Saying nice things to plants helps them grow, so why wouldn’t it work on you. The more you say your affirmation, the more it will get ingrained in your brain. You may not always believe your affirmation but keep saying it
anyways, it will eventually stick. Positive thoughts make positive people.
